Extinguishing the Myths in Fire Suppression
Fire suppression is a critical part of creating a safe workplace, yet there are often misconceptions when it comes to the equipment and requirements. Those misconceptions can create confusion and risk in the workplace, but we’re here to provide clarity and share the facts behind proper maintenance, usage, and compliance for your fire suppression equipment so you can keep your customers, employees, and business safe.
MYTHS
ANY EXTINGUISHER WORKS ON ANY FIRE
There are eight different extinguishing agents used in modern fire extinguishers, each designed for specific fire classes and recommended for different situations. Not all extinguishers will work on any fire, making it important that your business is equipped with the right type for your specific business needs.
UNUSED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS WILL ALWAYS WORK
Just because a fire extinguisher has never been used doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to work. Extinguishers require routine inspections, whether they’ve been discharged or not. Over time, they can lose pressure, the agent can settle or compact, and components can become damaged in storage. Any of these issues can cause the extinguisher to fail when it’s needed most.
IF THE EXTINGUISHER TAG IS ATTACHED, THE EXTINGUISHER IS COMPLIANT
A fire extinguisher tag shows the most recent annual inspection, but that alone doesn’t make it compliant. An extinguisher can still be non‑compliant if it has damage, missing components, improper pressure, or blocked access, even when the tag is present. This is why monthly visual inspections, in addition to yearly inspections, are important for identifying issues and ensuring the fire extinguisher is always ready to use.
IF THE GAUGE IS IN GREEN, THE EXTINGUISHER IS GOOD TO GO
It’s important for a fire extinguisher’s gauge to read in the green, but that doesn’t automatically mean the extinguisher is compliant or ready for use. The gauge only reflects pressure. It doesn’t account for physical damage, missing parts, required maintenance, or internal issues that could prevent the extinguisher from operating properly. A full inspection is always needed to confirm it’s truly ready.
EMPLOYEES WILL KNOW HOW TO USE AN EXTINGUISHER IF NEEDED
Many people assume that employees will automatically know how to properly use a fire extinguisher. In reality, many employees have never operated one and may use it incorrectly under stress. Proper fire extinguisher training is essential for creating a safe and confident workplace. Employees need to understand when to use an extinguisher, how to apply the PASS method, and when evacuation is the safer choice. Regular hands‑on training helps ensure employees have the confidence to respond quickly when it matters most.
EXTINGUISHERS ARE OPTIONAL IF YOU HAVE A SUPPRESSION SYSTEM
Fire extinguishers are still required in workplaces, even when a fire suppression system is installed. NFPA 1 outlines requirements for portable fire extinguishers and specifies when they must be provided, regardless of suppression systems.
FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS DON’T NEED REGULAR SERVICE
Fire suppression systems require service twice a year to ensure they are fully operational, detect damage or wear, and ensure compliance with fire codes and manufacturer specifications. Lack of regular inspections and maintenance can result in failure during a fire.
FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS DO MORE DAMAGE THAN THE FIRE
Fire suppression systems are designed to detect and control fires early, significantly reducing heat, smoke, and fire spread. Any damage caused by the system itself is typically far less severe than the damage, downtime, and safety risks associated with an uncontrolled fire.

From fire extinguishers to fire suppression systems, each piece of equipment plays a critical role in protecting lives, property, and businesses.
